Moscow, May 21, Interfax – Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia is concerned about growing violence against Christians in African and Arab countries.
“Violence has spread further against Christians in Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan and other countries, and the radicals’ pressure on the Christian minority has increased in Egypt and Libya, which is compelling Christians to leave their homes and abandon their countries,” Patriarch Kirill said at an Easter reception at the Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
The situation is the worst in Syria, he said. “The radical groups are using terror as they are struggling their way towards power and they are trying to impose the spirit of religious intolerance on the Syrian people,” he said.
The Russian patriarch said the situation must not be watched indifferently and expressed the hope that if an international conference on Syria is held these issues “will be duly presented to the world community.”
