The Russian Orthodox Church cannot give preference to any political party, since it is open to people with different political views said Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations.
“The Church will not bless the creation of a separate party that will represent its interests, it is open to people of different political orientations,” Metropolitan Hilarion said, answering a question from a TV viewer of the “Church and the World” program, reports the press service of the Synodal Department for Church Relations with Society and the Media.
The metropolitan reminded the viewers that at the annual World Russian People’s Council, which is chaired by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, leaders and representatives of various political parties deliver their speeches.
“The interests of the Church are the interests of the people. Therefore, we do not believe that any political party should represent our interests. If this happens, then we will effectively exclude representatives of other political parties from the Church, and we do not want to do this. The church is open to everyone,” concluded Metropolitan Hilarion.
