It’s worth noting how much of what we say in life can affect another human being. This is true for both the joy we bring to others, as well as the sadness we can bring through negativity, or the complete absence of uplifting words.
As part of a quest to learn more about others, I often ask the question, “What is the best compliment you have ever received?” I find it interesting how much you can learn from this one question. When you hear the compliment that sticks out most to someone, you can also hear what must also matter most to them. For instance, a scholarly person might say, their best compliment was being recognized for their achievements; whereas, a body builder might say their best compliment was being recognized for their physical fitness.
Sadly, for many when I ask this question, I get, “I don’t really know” or, “I can’t remember the last time I was even complimented.” I think, doesn’t everyone deserve a compliment? Doesn’t everyone possess something that could be recognized or noticed?
I do believe that God designed everyone with a unique purpose and a unique set of strengths. Let it be our job to notice the beauty in others’. I challenge you to find a way to compliment someone each day this week, those you see often and those you have just run into.
We are the voices of Christ on this earth. Let us love one another through encouragement and seek to bring joy to this world. Let it begin with a compliment.
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
– Ephesians 4:29
